WHO IS KNICKY?
BREED: Blue Heeler/Cattle Dog
SIZE: Approx 30 - 40 lbs
BEHAVIOR: Very scared of humans; friendly to dogs; street smart, intelligent, observant
DETAILS: Has been seen with a collar with jangly tags (one may be bone shaped); Has been seen with a slight limp
SIGHTINGS: First seen in Fairpark June 10th, last seen in the Avenues June 22nd
WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE KNICKY?
DO NOT CALL TO HIM OR CHASE HIM; JUST IGNORE HIM AND DON'T MAKE EYE CONTACT! We want to keep him feeling safe in the nieghborhood; any eye contact, following or speaking to him makes him feel hunted and he will move to another area, which makes trapping him harder.
INSTEAD, GRAB YOUR PHONE AND TAKE A SLY PHOTO IF YOU STILL HAVE HIM IN YOUR GENERAL SIGHTS.
CALL ME RIGHT AWAY AND TELL ME THE EXACT LOCATION AND TIME OF THE SIGHTING. (Even if you only saw my posters days later, please call anyway! Every sighting matters.) 917 723 2323
HOW TO SUPPORT THIS EFFORT TO FIND KNICKY?
IF YOU HAVE A SECURITY CAMERA (LIKE THE RING). CHECK YOUR FOOTAGE TO SEE IF THERE IS ANY EVIDENCE OF HIS PRESENCE IN YOUR FRONT OR BACK YARD.
IF YOU SEE ANY SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS ABOUT A DOG THAT LOOKS LIKE THIS, OR YOU HEAR OF SOMEONE IN THE DOG PARK SAYING THEY SAW A SIMILAR DOG, LET ME KNOW! 917 723 2323
IF YOU THINK OF AREAS THAT NEED POSTERS OR HAVE POSTERS THAT ARE FALLING APART, LET ME KNOW!
LET YOUR NEIGHBORS KNOW ABOUT THIS EFFORT, AND THAT I WILL BE CLEANING UP ALL THE POSTERS AS SOON AS WE HAVE HIM SAFE AND SOUND!

COMMON TIMES OF SIGHTINGS: 7am, 11 am, 5pm, 7 pm.
COMMON OBSERVATIONS: He likes to hang out in open areas (lawns, fields), will approach dogs on and off leash to say high, will not allow himself to be approached and will run as soon as he is given any direct attention from a human. Some tipsters have fed him by leaving food and water out for him. IF YOU ARE FEEDING HIM or think he is the one eating your food, please call me. We are trying to establish one feeding location! It may be yours -- but we have to choose ONE so we can establish a place to trap him.
WHAT IS THE PLAN IN CAPTURING A FEARFUL DOG LIKE KNICKY?
I am working with a credentialed and highly successful dog trapper. She has reunited dogs and cats with their owners (her latest success happened just earlier this morning, June 22, with another lost dog in Provo), as well as trapped lost strays, all over Utah and beyond, has been featured in the news, and is willing to work with me to capture Knicky despite a very busy schedule. Here's how it works:
We put up a LOT of posters in the area where he as last seen, and a little beyond that in case he is on the move. The more posters, the higher the chances that someone can call in a new sighting. (ALL POSTERS WILL COME DOWN THE MOMENT WE HAVE HIM! I cannot WAIT for this part of the plan!!!!)
We are using people's tips of his sightings to map his movements and habits, so we can narrow down where he is showing up most frequently
We want him to "settle" -- find an area where he feels safe and "ignored."
We establish a feeding station with a wildlife camera and see how frequently he uses it. If he doesnt use it, we find a new spot until we find one that he uses multiple times.
Once he returns to the feeding station enough, we set a humane trap at the feeding station, and if necessary we do an overnight watch to ensure we are trapping Knicky (and releasing any cats or other animals that might get in accidentally).
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF KNICKY GETTING LOST?
We don't know who the owner of Knicky is. I saw first him on June 11th, on the side of the road coming off the I-15 ramp on 600 North in the Fairpark neighborhood. I stopped and tried to catch him, but he ran into the off ramp meadow.
How do I know his name? I don't! I gave him the name Knicky to make it easier for people to remember him, and to think of him as more than just an anonymous "stray." The Knicks had just pulled off the greatest comeback game in NBA history and I named him "Knicky" in the hopes that their luck would rub off on him.
For the next two days, I posted on social media (Reddit, Facebook, NextDoor) hoping to find an owner who would come forward and go look for his/her lost dog. No one came forward. Meanwhile, I rode my bike Friday morning in case I could find him again-- AND I DID! Several times that morning! (That picture of him facing the camera, I took that while he was resting in the shade of a front yard lawn.) The road crew who have been working along 600 N for weeks now came up to me to tell me that they saw him at least the day before (June 10th) if not earlier. They too were worried for his safety, and left water for him.
However, my approach of following him around was all wrong. (I eventually contacted the dog trapper that was being recommended to me on social media and she has set me on the path we are on now: the one that actually works to capture fearful dogs, not by trying to "hunt" them and catch them, but by luring them into a humane trap after an extensive campaign of posters/tips/mapping the dog's whereabouts and establishing a camera/feeding station. But I'm getting ahead of myself . . . )
On Saturday June 13th, a Reddit post appeared (not mine this time), referring to the "Lost Blue heeler" that I had been posting about on the r/SaltLakeCity subreddit for the past two days. He was seen and photographed by a blue dumpster, in a different part of the neighborhood, almost at Poplar Grove, and in a very busy intersection (even busier than the offramp at 600 N!). He was now at S. Temple and S 900 W (near Rancho Markets and the train tracks). So he was on the move, and I had NO idea if I would ever see him again.
For three days (Saturday, Sunday and Monday) I drove around Fairpark and Poplar Grove, handing out flyers. No one had seen him. There were no calls with sightings.
But on Tuesday, as I was checking back on that first location (meadow by the offramp), hoping he had eaten the food I'd been leaving him (NOPE), I got a call from someone in the Avenues: The woman on the other end of the line had just seen one of my social media posts, and she had updates for me. He had been spotted by 11th Avenue between D and H by several people, both on Monday and Tuesday morning. And then later that day, I got another incredible tip, with a photo from Sunday night -- midnight: He had crossed over from the West side to the East side at S Temple, with the photograph from A St/ 2nd Avenue. He was probably looking for water and smartly chose the area of Memory Grove to get to the creek.
Since then, for the week of Monday June 15th to Monday June 22nd, he's been spotted all over the Avenues -- especially the upper Avenues, where he clearly has lots of peace and quiet in people's backyards, but also access to fountains and sprinklers as well as food. If you're in the Avenues, I"m sure you've noticed that we've been putting up posters and handing out flyers to get as many people aware of his presence -- and informed on what to do when they see him -- as possible. To reiterate: IGNORE HIM/TAKE A SLY PHOTO IF POSSIBLE/TEXT OR CALL ME!
Thank you for helping this currently "ownerless" dog. I'm not a professional rescuer; I just felt a sense of responsibilty to this little guy because of how sweet, savvy and resilient he is. Maybe I would do the same for any dog, but this is my first time in this situation, and here I am stepping up for Knicky since no one else has. I DO have a professional rescuer at my side, however, leading this effort, and nothing we are doing is random or haphazard. We are relying on the heroes out there -- each and every one of you who pays that little bit of extra attention on their daily walk, who makes that call or text to me with the smallest amount of information or even advice. You guys are the ones who will get this guy to safety and possibly reunite him with a worried and heartbroken owner who simply may not have access to the information tools we have. And even if it turns out that, sadly, there is no willing owner to take him back (as is sometimes the case) -- I am going to make sure he will have the most loving home for the rest of his life.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND ATTENTION! - Team Heeler
